Resort Information

The delightful resort of Fuegen, which grew up around a former iron-ore mine, lies beneath the Fuegenberg mountain. This popular hiking and 'wellness' centre, through which the Ziller river flows. boasts a new thermal baths and open-air swimming pool, as well as a fascinating local history museum, working dairy and a bacon smokery, all of which welcome visitors. Several well-marked walking trails start from the town, including the famous Zillertal Valley high-altitude walk.

Itinerary

Day One

Fly to Austria, and transfer to Fuegen and your chosen hotel. Depending what time you arrive, you may also like to take a stroll into the village this evening.

Day Two

This morning, meet your walking guide for the first time, and head out through the forest, heading to the tiny church at Marienberg. You'll then return along the aptly named Panoramaweg, which boasts wonderful views of the surrounding Alps. On arrival, enjoy a reviving complimentary schnapps and a taste of local ham (speck), at the Zillertaler Speckstube.

Day Three

Today's optional excursion takes us to the 'Sound of Music' city of Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Huddled beneath the imposing Hohensalzburg Castle and straddling the Salzach River, Salzburg is a treasure trove of Baroque architecture.

The day includes a walking tour, in the company of a local guide who will bring to life this wonderful place, after which you can explore the city at your own pace.

Day Four

Our second walk takes place today. Once again you'll meet your guide and enjoy an easy wander on the marked paths that lead from the resort. Gently paced, this morning's wander also gives you the chance to get to know your fellow 'ramblers'.

In the afternoon you're free to rest and relax, or to explore Fuegen. Don't miss the fascinating working dairy and the bacon smokery, where you can sample local produce, or the chance to head out along one of the many walking paths leading from the town into the hills above.

Day Five

Today is left free for you to enjoy all the delights of Fuegen and its surroundings.

Day Six

On today's optional excursion you'll leave behind the green valleys, and head for the frozen heights of the Hintertux Glacier. Ride the historic, narrow-gauge Zillertal steam railway through stunning scenery to a wilderness of ice and snow. Enjoy a glass of schnapps, and then take the coach to the foot of the Hintertux. Our day also includes an exhilarating ride on the Tuxer Fernerhaus gondola, which transports you to the dizzy heights of 2660m and the mountain restaurant, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Zillertal Alps.

Day Seven

Our last included walk takes you high above the resort on the Speiljoch cable car (payable locally), from the top station of which a 'barefoot' path winds to the 1920m summit of the peak and a wonderful panoramic view. From here, a 30-minute walk leads down to Arzjoch lake, and you'll then have the option to return to the top station to catch the cable car back down, or enjoy the views as you make the three-hour descent to the resort on foot.

Day Eight

Bid "Auf wiedersehen" to your Tyrolean hosts today, and return to the airport to board your flight home.
